Tensions ran high as the audience voiced a wide range of concerns during a recent Proposition 50 panel at Santa Clarita’s College of the Canyons. The California special election has sparked nationwide attention.

“Basically, what Prop 50 is doing is saying what you’re doing is wrong, so I’m going to do it in return, and I think that that’s wrong,” said College of the Canyons student Abigayle Monis.

Championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, California voters will decide on Prop 50 in a critical special election on November 4. “We’re putting the maps on the ballot, and we’re giving the power to the people,” says California Governor Gavin Newsom.

The proposition authorizes temporary changes to congressional district maps in response to Texas’s partisan redistricting. “We’re going to get another three or four or five in addition. Texas would be the biggest one,” says President Trump.

The move would temporarily redraw California’s 52 congressional districts, countering what Democrats describe as a Republican led gerrymander pushed by President Trump.

The Political Science Club and the Institute of Ethics of Law and Public Policy hosted the panel debate.  “As a political science professor, I want my students to be educated about their role as citizens,” said Phil Gussin, College of the Canyons Political Science Professor.

“With this proposition coming up, I want to help students understand and the community at large understand what’s at stake with Proposition 15,” said Gussin.

Many Californians have already made their way to the election box ahead of the November 4 special election. The panel of COC students and Santa Clarita professionals presented a stark difference in their perspectives.

The panel discussion ran well over its scheduled time and finally wrapped up, leaving Santa Clarita and California to decide at the polls on November 4th.
