A row of framed paintings hung on a bright white wall in an art gallery or hallway. The paintings, which appear to be mostly landscapes and abstract pieces, are framed in black or dark wood and recede into the distance on the left. The painting closest to the viewer on the right depicts a green field or orchard leading up to purple mountains under a hazy sky.

City Hall proves to be more than just the city’s main administrative building for our local government, as they recently held their ‘Autumn Views Reception’ showcasing art done by local artists in the hallway of their first floor.

Santa Clarita Arts is a local company that puts on art showcases all over the city, working to display local art in as many places as possible.

“It’s important to display local art because it gives that sense of community in the city. The city’s very arts-focused, council members really like the arts, and you just feel a bit better sense of community if you show like actual local artists,” said exhibit assistant Garrett Fagan.

One local artist is more than just an artist. Naomi Young is the president of the Santa Clarita Arts Association, an organization that hosts art shows and monthly meetings featuring free art demonstrations.

Young took the time to go over all five of her paintings in City Hall, to break down what each of these paintings represented to her.

“A lot of writers keep their poetry in a drawer; it doesn’t help you if you want it published. And it takes you to a scene of a forest with the changing color of the leaves. So that’s a time of change,” said Young.

The art in the hall changes every three months with a different theme, and it is a way for City Hall to give back and display some of their residents’ hard work.

“As a kid, I did not grow up with art, and I didn’t do any, I didn’t have any art supplies, and so for me, I hope I inspire other people to see that it’s never too late, you can start, and to have my art showing at City Hall is a great pride. It’s really it’s a good boost. It’s beautiful,” said Young.
