A child experiencing an injury to the head was airlifted from an empty field along a Valencia roadway Thursday afternoon.

The initial 911 call came into Los Angeles County Fire’s Command and Control center at 11:26 a.m. reporting a child with closed head trauma, a fire spokesman confirmed.

Units from Fire Station 126 and 124 arrived to an undisclosed location on Tourney Road in Valencia a few minutes later and discovered the child was experiencing slurred speech, the spokesman noted.

Fire personnel requested an air squad, more commonly referred to as a medical helicopter, or air ambulance.

Copter 16 was initially dispatched to the scene but was canceled in favor of Copter 18. The aircraft landed in dusty field of short dead grass along Tourney Road at 12:03 p.m., according to times noted in the fire department’s logs.

Helicopters in the county fire department Air Operations division are staffed with on-board paramedics. American Medical Response and fire crews transported the child from an ambulance to the helicopter.
