Vertical banner hanging from a light pole on a college campus. The banner features the text "College of the Canyons" in bold yellow and white letters on a blue background, along with a photo of smiling students seated in a lecture or event setting. Below the photo, the words "ALWAYS DYNAMIC" are displayed in yellow text against a stylized paintbrush-stroke background. The scene is framed by lush green tree branches in the background.

College of the Canyons has an annual enrollment of just over 40,000 but with a group that big, the college needs to make an effort to keep students engaged outside of classes. COC is no stranger to this problem, as there are various activities and events on campus.

Their various clubs offer students to come together and meet new people that share their interests. If they desire a debate or a political discussion, they can find the political science club. Or if they need a safe space to converse with people, they can attend the gender sexuality alliance club.

Despite other various features of the campus, like the leisure lawn, a hammock-heavy garden where students can study, or the coffee kiosk where they can grab a drink,

Is it hard to get students to come to campus when they’re not needed?

“It honestly depends on what your interests are,” said Zachery Jaquinto, a COC student.

“If it’s niche, it can be hard, especially if you’re lost and don’t know what to do. But if you know people who share your interests.”

“I think it’s much easier to find people to come to COC,” said Jaquinto.

COC is a commuter school, meaning students must make their way to campus. There is no on-campus housing.

For students with cars, getting to campus isn’t that difficult. But it can be easier said than done for students who may need to take the bus or catch a ride with somebody else.

Ultimately, is it worth it to the students of this school to come outside of their needed classes, or would students rather only come for what they need rather than what they might want?

“It’s definitely worth it when you know professors, they’ll share stuff with you, they’ll tell you events that they have planned, or that some of their friends who are also faculty have planned, so it’s definitely worth it,” said Renee Gomez-Serna, COC student.

“COC has such a vibrant and engaging community that you definitely want to be present for,” said Gomez-Serna.

In the end, it’s up to the student whether or not they want to attend extracurriculars. But COC has kept up with the students and their wants with their vibrant campus and lively students and faculty
