A Metrolink commuter train approaches a station platform in a hilly area, with the train number 694 visible on the front and signs indicating car stops along the platform.

Commuting can be a challenge for college students in California. But a particular company is “all aboard” in helping students avoid the transportation gridlock.

“Our investment was in the next generation of students,” said Brett Hawkins, Public Relations Manager for Metrolink.

“If we introduce students to public transit early, we can help make sustainable travel a familiar and reliable option as these people grow up and make more sustainable decisions about how they commute,” said Hawkins.

Calculating the dedicated time required for schoolwork and commuting costs is a significant factor in deciding which college to choose.

“I had to take a 50-question quiz from my Pan African Studies class, and usually that’s something I do on my commute home,” said Job Lina, a Cal State Los Angeles student.

“I do a lot of work on the train,” said Lina.

The free Metrolink Student Adventure Pass pilot aimed to introduce new student riders. Although successful, it will conclude on June 30th and relaunch on July 1st, offering a 50% student discount.

“I get on the train, and then I stop at Union Station. Depending on what I do that day, I’ll either go to Little Tokyo, but then I usually take the J line from Union Station all the way here, and then walk back over to the dorm,” said Lina

With Metrolink’s aim to change California’s car culture behavior. Students now account for 36 percent of the uptick in ridership on the Metrolink rail.

“You can also go to dining, you can also go to recreational activities, bike trails, the beach, etc. It doesn’t stop there, just because it’s called a student and adventure pass, you can think outside of that box,” said Hawkins.

“It is your pass to go anywhere on the rails for any reason of your choosing,” said Hawkins.

Students can now get on the right track, making their college journey a successful destination.
