The walls at College of the Canyons are usually covered in posters advertising an event, clubs and even messages for students. A zone of free speech and expression.
But, there is one type of poster that is reportedly being ripped down time and time again. Posters showing pictures of kidnapped Israelis.
These posters have been put up in many communities and college campuses across the country to show support for the Israeli cause. They have also been a source of controversy.
With the cease-fire over and the war between Israel and Hamas resuming, the rise of anti-semitism shows no signs of slowing.
One local is saying enough is enough.
“What I have done to get them to do something is that I have encouraged them to sign a resolution…prepared by an organization called Universities United Against Terrorism,” said local resident Steve Petzold.
“Over 100 colleges have signed this statement, and it basically asks people to support Israel against Hamas. So that Israel and Palestinian people can live in peace.”
With this being the case, many people in SCV have seen or experienced antisemitism. But there are those in the community looking to offer support, like at Beth Shalom in Saugus.
“We offer, for example, we have therapists that are working hard and diligent to work with students and are available,” said Rabbi Jay Siegel of Congregation Beth Shalom.
While it is not known if it is COC students or third parties taking down the posters, the question still stands as to what COC’s stance on the war is.
“As a learning community that is committed to knowledge, education and diversity, we are devastated by the violence in the Middle East,” said College of the Canyons Public Information Officer Eric Harnish.
“The shock and trauma of the ongoing war can absolutely affect students and employees and friends and neighbors here in the Santa Clarita community,” said Harnish.
