Santa Clarita residents will have a chance to learn life-saving techniques from local firefighters during Sidewalk CPR Day on Thursday, June 6.
Sidewalk CPR Day is a free community event and county-wide initiative spearheaded by the Los Angeles County Fire Department to teach residents hands-only CPR techniques during National CPR Week.
Santa Clarita residents will be able to attend this event between the times of 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at Central Park, near the outdoor basketball courts and Field 10, or at the Westfield Valencia Town Center, near the Apple Store.
Participants will learn in just five minutes the steps needed to keep a potential drowning victim, or someone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, alive until paramedics arrive.
“I encourage everyone, especially parents, to take advantage of this free event,” said Assistant Fire Chief Anderson Mackey. “Having the basic knowledge of CPR can allow bystanders to provide that lifesaving bridge between the time of an accident and the arrival of first responders.”
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning remains the leading cause of death in children under the age of four.
The city and county remind residents to never take their eyes off a child when he or she is near a body of water and do not rely on barriers near a pool or spa to keep children out of the water.
The City of Santa Clarita and LACoFD urge residents to learn the steps to stay water safe and help put an end to these tragic accidents.
