DR. Angela Davis was here on campus recently for her event: a conversation with Angela Davis. While the reception on campus was positive… This event wasn’t without controversy.
Matt Funicello, the COC Campus Security Officer said that he thinks Angela Davis being paid thousands of dollars to appear and the lack of a speaker from the other side of the aisle are issues he has with the event. “If she approached the college and said… ‘Hey, I’d like to hold an event on racism and anti racism. I’d like to use your performing arts center. Here’s the money to do so.’ Totally cool with that.” Said Funicello.
However regardless of this pushback, at the event itself there was little to no protest. Those in attendance were grateful to hear from someone they consider to be a civil rights icon.
